May 17th International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

The world is seeing hard-won progress in protecting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people – but there is still a long road ahead.

To spotlight the advances and challenges, the theme of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia this year is: “No one left behind: Equality, freedom and justice for all.”

Among the recent advances: Social and legal norms have shifted away from criminalizing LGBTQIA+ people and towards safeguarding their rights. Since 2019, 11 countries have legalize marriage equality.  Since 2017, 13 countries have removed laws criminalizing LGBTQIA+ sexuality.

In this challenging global context, Canada remains determined to work collaboratively with members of civil society at home and abroad to protect and advance 2SLGBTQI+ rights. Canada puts respect for human rights at the heart of its international engagement through the Feminist International Assistance Policy, and last year we launched our first-ever 2SLGBTQIA+ Action Plan.

“Today, (May 17th) around the world, 2SLGBTQIA+ persons, civil society groups, human rights defenders, community members and allies are standing together against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia. Canada stands with them. Human rights belong to all people, everywhere, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.” Federal Government of Canada

Exciting News - Sara Cecena Garcia Bursary

Each year a select few international students from across the province are selected as recipients of the Sara Cecena Garcia Bursary.  Sara was a charismatic student who was always willing to help others and always maintained a positive attitude.  This bursary was created in her memory and is awarded to students who share her qualities.  For the first time in Northeast Kings history, one of our NSISP students was selected and has earned a full scholarship to join us here again next year.  Congratulations to Joanna Murray!!  Your Titan family is excited to have you returning next year!
